Teams are already on the ground collecting water samples, mapping the pollution pathway, and working to contain the contaminated flow before it causes further damage to wildlife and critical water systems. The rapid response was triggered on the morning of April 30, 2026, after KWS officers observed abnormal foamy water entering the park through the Mlolongo drainage corridor. The inflow, described as white, effervescent, and unnaturally coloured, raised immediate concerns of toxic contamination. Investigators have begun tracing the source of the discharge, with early attention on nearby industrial areas around Mlolongo, including zones near Orbit Chemical Industries Ltd. Authorities say laboratory analysis will be key in confirming the origin and composition of the pollutants. Foaming streams in Nairobi National Park showing indication of possible contamination in the water | Bernard Gitau The contaminated water is flowing into the Mbagathi River and Athi River systems, placing Athi Dam and downstream users at risk. The potential impact extends to aquatic life, wildlife, and communities that depend on the water for farming, livestock, and domestic use. KWS has issued a public advisory urging residents to avoid contact with affected water bodies, refrain from fishing, and report any unusual water conditions or distressed wildlife. At the same time, the agency has warned industries within the catchment against illegal discharge of untreated waste, stating that offenders will face prosecution, fines, closure of facilities, and liability for environmental restoration. Investigations remain ongoing as authorities race to contain the pollution and prevent further harm to one of Kenya’s most vital eContinue Reading

Boda Boda Riders Turn Forest Guardians in Kenya Conservation Shift Boda Boda motorcycles, while offering fast and convenient transport across Kenya, have long played a troubling role in aiding environmental crimes. From ferrying illegally sourced charcoal, timber, and cedar poles to transporting bushmeat and even live wild animals, motorbikes have become a weak link in the country’s conservation efforts. Peter Gachaiya, a reformed poacher and former charcoal burner from Eburu Forest in Nakuru County, shared his story with Big3Africa. His motorbike once made him highly efficient in navigating dense forests and evading law enforcement. “I was deeply involved in environmental crimes. My motorbike allowed me access to remote forest areas and helped me escape arrest,” Gachaiya admitted. He revealed that cedar posts were especially prized for their high value, leading to extensive deforestation. “Charcoal burning, illegal farming, and timber harvesting caused the loss of thousands of forest acres. This disrupted rainfall patterns and triggered human-wildlife conflict,” he added. A road accident while transporting illegal forest products left Gachaiya with permanent scars — a grim reminder of his past. Beyond Eburu, similar patterns of destruction have been reported. Daniel Mburu, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Manager for Ndaragwa Forest, expressed concern over rampant illegal logging of cedar poles, often facilitated by Boda Boda operators. “The vastness of Aberdare forest makes it difficult for KFS, KWS, and other agencies to monitor all areas, leading to uncontrolled logging,” he said. The threat extends to Kenya’s national parks and reserves. Lucy Muita, Assistant Director at Aberdare National Park, highlighted how criminals use motorbikes to smuggle bushmeat and evade capture. “Motorcycles access hard-to-reach areas and escape quickly, posing risks not just to wildlife but also to law enforcement,” she noted. Muita emphasized the importance of protecting ecosystems like Aberdare and Mt. Kenya, vital water sources for over two million people, and home to rare species such as the Mountain Bongo and wild pigs. In response, a multi-agency campaign was launched to turn Boda Boda riders into allies in conservation. Through the Boda Boda Road Safety and Environmental Conservation Champions Programme, organizations including Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), KFS, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), and Rhino Ark have trained over 130 riders as conservation and road safety champions in Eburu and the Aberdare ecosystems. Peter Gachaiya was among the first 49 trained riders. “Since we took on this new role, Eburu Forest has recovered significantly, with improved rainfall patterns and reduced human-wildlife conflict,” he shared. The installation of an electric fence by Rhino Ark has also helped reduce such conflicts. These reformed riders now engage in sustainable forest use — harvesting honey, collecting animal fodder, and participating in eco-tourism initiatives. To expand the initiative, 85 new champions from communities near Aberdare and Mt. Kenya were recently flagged off in Shamata. Each has been assigned to maintain a one-kilometre section of a 400km electric fence encircling the Aberdare ecosystem. The United Nations Special Envoy for Road Safety and former Formula One President John Todt with KWS Assistant Director Lucy Muita after the flagging off ceremony of Boda Boda Road Safety and Environment conservation Champions programme in Shamata, Nyandarua County. Todt donated 1,000 UN-standard helmets. The launch was graced by UN Special Envoy for Road Safety and former Formula One President Jean Todt, who donated 1,000 UN-standard helmets and protective gear to support the riders’ safety. “Kenya is one of the most beautiful countries, but it faces a tragic road safety situation,” Todt observed, urging continued support for thesContinue Reading

KWS Cracks Down on Wild Trafficking – From Ants to Bees The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has set free over 5,000 live garden ants back into the wild. The insects were part of a court case exhibit where four individuals got busted for trafficking them. On May 7 were sentenced to a year in prison or a KES 1 million fine each. The ants were on their way to the European and Asian exotic pet market, where apparently people are willing to shell out up to KES 176,000 per colony of the rare ants. According to Paul Udoto, the Head of Corporate Communications at KWS, wildlife crime isn’t just about elephants and rhinos anymore, as traffickers are now targeting all sorts of less flashy but still super important species like insects, reptiles, and plants with medicinal properties. Four Jailed for Illegal Trafficking of Garden Ants Between 2020 and 2025, said Mr Udoto, KWS and their partners have managed to intercept a whole bunch of illegal wildlife products, including 5,140 queen ants, 22 tortoises, 5 snakes, a bee swarm, and even a praying mantis. He said the creatures are crucial for the local ecosystem as they help with soil health, pollination, pest control, and forest regeneration, and messing with them doesn’t just throw off Kenya’s natural balance – it also messes with long-term food security and community well-being. He further revealed that during that period, 41 suspects have been nabbed for trying to sneak 73,925 kg of Aloe gum out of Kenya, and over 25,331 kg of sandalwood was seized in 34 operations, leading to 79 arrests. This stuff is like gold in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. This whole situation shines a light on the shady world of biopiracy, where outsiders exploit Kenya’s resources without a care for the locals. Prof. Erustus Kanga, the KWS Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga, the KWS Director General, said they are teaming up with local and international partners to take down biopiracy criminal networks. Prof Kanga revealed that KWS is integrating advanced technologies to fight traffickers. This includes deployment of micro-CT scanners at major ports of entry to detect concealed wildlife, establishment of DNA databases to trace species origin and support prosecutions. Other efforts are collaborations with Interpol, customs authorities, and conservation NGOs to dismantle transnational wildlife crimeContinue Reading

Mama Rachel Ruto is working with the 4K Clubs of Kenya, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, to establish kitchen gardens in public primary schools across the country. First Lady mama Rachel Ruto during the inaugural launch of her Mama Kitchen Garden programme at Statehouse primary School. “This partnership with the 4K Clubs of Kenya will enhance the schools’ nutritional capacity but also serve as a demonstration where children will learn the importance of growing their food,” she said. This is one of the flagship programs by the First Lady, aimed at supporting sustainable school feeding through the production of food on school grounds. According to the ministry of Health, national levels of acute malnutrition is at 6% in Kenya while in Arid and Semi Arid areas have consistently remained above the emergency threshold of 15%. First Lady mama Rachel Ruto during the inaugural launch of her Mama Kitchen Garden programme at Statehouse primary School. MOH in 2023 estimated 945,610 children aged 6 to 59 months required management of acute malnutrition which was a reduction compared to 970,214 reported in February 2023. There were 216,794 cases of severe acute malnutrition with 728,816 moderate severe malnutrition cases. The report also recorded 144,940 pregnant and lactating women with acute malnutrition and needed treatment. With such worrying figures, Mama Rachel said primary schools are key players in the national food security agenda, as they provide an excellent platform to instill the values of sustainable agriculture and nutrition in young minds. First Lady mama Rachel Ruto during the inaugural launch of her Mama Kitchen Garden programme at Statehouse primary School. “Through their active participation in initiatives like kitchen gardening, these young champions are contributing to food and nutritional security while gaining practical skills that will benefit them for a lifetime,” she said. Other efforts being undertaken by the government is planting fruit trees in schools through the greening campaign targeting to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has stated that 30 percent of the 15 billion trees should beContinue Reading

Uneven Bench to Decide Fate of Aberdare Ecosystem The fate of the Aberdare ecosystem, featuring majestic peaks, steep forested ravines, and open moorlands, will be determined by a special bench appointed by Chief Justice Martha Koome. This follows a ruling by Nyeri Environment and Lands Court Judge James Olola, extending the Conservatory Order on the Ihithe-Ndunyu Njeru section of the Mau Mau road project. The East African Wildlife Society (EAWLS) challenged this project proposed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), citing environmental concerns. A road through the Aberdares. | Photo Courtesy Critics argue that the road project, cutting through the Aberdare National Park and Forest Reserve, poses an ecological threat, potentially affecting endangered species and disrupting a critical water catchment area. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) initially opposed the project in 2009, citing potential destruction of endangered tree species, but reversed its stance this year. Dr. Paul Matiku, Executive Director of Nature Kenya, stated, “Kenya needs roads but not across the forest and the park.” Rhino Ark CEO Christian Lambrechts added, “The road will undermine the recent commitments made by President William Ruto to increase tree cover to more than 30% by 2032.” The project’s Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) by Norken International Ltd reveals that approximately 257 acres of vegetation, including 185 acres of bamboo and 35 acres of moorland, will be cleared. The Aberdare ecosystem is a critical water source for rivers such as the Athi and Ewaso Nyiro, and disruptions could impact millions downstream. A study by the Universities of Nairobi, Oxford, and Amsterdam highlighted that the project may not bring significant socio-economic benefits and could be more costly due to the challenging terrain. Experts suggest investing in agro-processing industries in the counties instead, which could reduce post-harvest losses and create employment. The project is also expected to impact tourism, as the Aberdare National Park is home to over 250 bird species and the critically endangered mountain bongo antelope. Dr. Dominic Walubengo from the National Environment Civil Society Alliance of Kenya emphasized that the funds could be better spent on sustainable development projects that protect theContinue Reading
