A groundbreaking renewable energy project in Meru County is set to commence construction in early 2026. It is expected to contribute 220 megawatts of electricity to the national grid upon its completion in three years. The KES 33 billion initiative will be located in Kandebene Sub-Location within the Tigania West Constituency.
The project’s development resulted from a strategic public-private partnership between the Meru County Government and Hewani Energy. According to the company, this electricity generation facility will be the first of its kind in Africa, serving as a utility-scale, grid-connected hybrid project.
Victor Mutuerandu, the Economic Development Manager at Hewani Energy, has revealed that the hybrid facility will harness 200 megawatts from wind turbines and an additional 20 megawatts from solar photovoltaic systems spread across 100 acres of land. The energy generated will be stored in a 10 MWh battery and seamlessly transmitted to the national grid through the Isiolo Sub-Station.
The project is a step forward in Kenya’s dream of enhancing renewable sources of energy that produce little to no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, helping to combat global warming and protect the environment.
