The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning of strong winds likely to affect at least 15 counties this weekend, with potential to cause significant damage.
Residents in Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale counties have been urged to remain alert as strong southerly winds exceeding 30 knots (15.4 m/s) are forecast.
In a statement, the Department noted that the forecast period begins at 3:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025, and is expected to last until 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 25, 2025.
“Moderate probability of occurrence is estimated between 33 and 66 percent.”
On Friday, strong southerly winds of over 30 knots are expected across the Coast, Southeastern Lowlands, and Northwestern Kenya. Wind speeds are predicted to intensify further to over 35 knots (18.0 m/s) on Saturday and Sunday before easing to around 25 knots (12.9 m/s) by Monday, May 26, 2025.
Dr David Gikungu, Director of the Meteorological Service, cautioned the public in these regions to prepare for potentially destructive winds and high ocean waves.
“There is a risk of gales and large waves over the Indian Ocean, with winds strong enough to blow off roofs and damage structures,” he warned.
Additionally, wave heights over coastal waters are anticipated to exceed two meters from Friday through Sunday, reducing to below two meters on Monday.
