Moja EV to Open Electric Vehicle Assembly Plant in Mombasa

Kenya’s electric mobility sector is set for a major boost with Moja EV announcing it will open an electric vehicle assembly plant in Mombasa in January 2026.

The company says it has secured a site and will begin with semi-knocked down assembly before moving to full production.

Moja EV CEO Wang Ai Ping said local assembly is expected to cut EV prices by reducing import taxes.

The plant will produce 3,000 units in its first year and scale to 5,000 annually, with the potential to employ between 4,000 and 6,000 people once fully operational.

The announcement came as the company handed over 30 EVs to taxi operators in Nairobi, adding to the more than 100 units it has already deployed through partnerships with taxi groups, leasing firms and other mobility players.

Kenya is pushing for 100% electric public transport in major cities by 2030 and plans to roll out 10,000 public charging stations to spur uptake. Several electric bus pilots are already underway.

Fleet operators at the event reported lower operating costs and reliability gains from EVs, while Moja EV said it will soon introduce the Neta Light, a model tailored for African urban transport and taxi use, aimed at making EV adoption more affordable.

Ping said Moja EV will continue to work with insurers, digital ride-hailing platforms and SACCOs as it expands its footprint in the fast-growing e-mobility market.
