I&M Bank Leads the Charge in Tackling E-Waste

Electronic waste has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges in today’s fast-paced digital world. With gadgets and devices being replaced more frequently, tonnes of discarded electronics end up in landfills, releasing toxic substances that contaminate soil, water, and air. Left unchecked, this problem threatens both human health and the environment. Yet when handled responsibly, E-Waste can be recycled and repurposed, reducing pollution and conserving valuable materials.

I&M Bank has stepped forward to address this challenge through its ongoing campaign “Together We Can Power a Cleaner Future.” In partnership with the WEEE Centre, the bank has created a safe and convenient system for customers and the public to dispose of their old electronics responsibly. From 6th to 14th October 2025, selected I&M Bank branches across Nairobi and beyond will serve as drop-off points for small devices such as phones, laptops, and chargers. For larger items like refrigerators, televisions, and microwaves, the bank has made it possible to schedule home or business pick-ups, ensuring that no electronic device is left to harm the environment.

This campaign is already showing results. To date, I&M Bank has collected over 4,121 kilograms of E-Waste from its designated points. That is more than four tonnes of toxic material diverted away from dumpsites and waterways. By recycling this waste, harmful chemicals are prevented from leaching into the environment while valuable metals like copper and aluminum are recovered and reused, reducing the need for fresh mining.

The initiative reflects I&M Bank’s broader commitment to sustainability. Over the years, the bank has been active in environmental conservation drives, from tree planting to championing clean energy solutions for businesses. These efforts align with the bank’s Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) goals, ensuring its growth is not only profitable but also responsible and impactful for communities.

What makes this campaign stand out is its accessibility. Customers going about their normal banking errands can now contribute to environmental protection simply by bringing in unused gadgets. Businesses and households with larger electronics can also participate without inconvenience, thanks to the collection system in place. This approach makes recycling practical and achievable for everyday citizens.

At its core, the initiative is about more than just waste management — it is about building a culture of responsibility. By encouraging people to think differently about what happens to their old devices, I&M Bank is helping shift society towards more sustainable habits. The impact extends beyond the environment, supporting new opportunities in recycling and promoting a circular economy.

With “Together We Can Power a Cleaner Future,” I&M Bank is showing that small individual actions, when combined, can have a big collective impact. It is a reminder that protecting the planet is everyone’s responsibility, and with platforms like this campaign, it is also within everyone’s reach.
