Carbon Credits Must Deliver More Than Cash to Farmers
Carbon credits can provide additional income for smallholder farmers, but their real value should extend beyond payments. Lessons from agricultural carbon projects in Kenya show that agroforestry, composting, soil and water conservation and improved farming practices can strengthen productivity, restore soils and build resilience — while also highlighting the need for transparency, fair benefit-sharing and meaningful farmer participation.
