Kenya Turns to Bamboo to Restore Water Sources and Create Jobs

Kenya is turning to bamboo as a nature-based solution for restoring water sources, rehabilitating degraded land and creating jobs. In Meru County, communities say bamboo has helped revive springs while supporting women-led businesses. Under its National Bamboo Development Strategy 2025–2035, Kenya plans to add 150,000 hectares of bamboo, while promoting processing and manufacturing to keep more value and jobs in the country.

East Africa Told to Prepare for Climate Shocks Beyond El Niño

East African governments are being urged to look beyond the immediate threat of El Niño and build permanent defences against increasingly severe climate shocks. VI Agroforestry says the region needs stronger early-warning systems, resilient infrastructure, sustainable farming, watershed restoration and locally led adaptation to reduce the risks of floods, landslides, drought and displacement.
